Athlete of the Month!

It's that time again! Time to announce CrossFit H Dub's athlete of the month. What makes up an Athlete of the Month? Not RX’ing every workout or lifting the most weight. This athlete exhibits consistency and a hard work mentality. Every time they come to the gym they have a good attitude and give their all. This person is also welcoming of others, helping make CFHD the best community there is. Each month we choose a different athlete and post some fun facts about them to help y’all get to know them better.

January's member of the month is Mr. Jake Powell. Jake has been dealing with a nagging back injury for about 4 months. While some people let injury become an excuse as to why they can't make it to the gym, Jake never let his become a crutch. Instead, he came in and trusted his coaches to come up with alternative workouts. Jake has also been seeing Dr. Peter Hinz of Cool Springs Chiropractic on a regular basis which has also helped in his journey to wellness. We admire your drive and commitment Jake. Keep doing what you're doing!

Name: Jake "BIG BONED" Powell Hometown: Cookeville, TN Age: 25 Occupation: Wealth Planner Tell us a little bit about yourself: I grew up in Cookeville, TN, became a VFL, and then moved to Florida for awhile to live the salt lyfe. Then, three years ago my parents adopted a special needs newborn child so I suddenly gained a brother. Wanting to be closer to him and the fam, I moved to Nashville a little over 2 years ago now. Long distance is the wrong distance. I've been a wealth planner with Raymond James for over 2 years and absolutely love being in Nashville. Outside of work I love slappin fives, Taylor Swift, hangin with the bros, and wettin the beak. Oh, and sports. Big sports guy. What were your goals when you started CrossFit? Honestly, when I first started crossfit I was a freshman in college and just didn't want to get fat. My goals have since evolved, but yes, that was goal number 1. How long have you been doing CrossFit and how did you get into it? I started Crossfit in May of 2010, so coming up on 7 years. 2010 is when Rich Froning made a splash into crossfit, and him being from Cookeville really made Crossfit popular there early on. I'm very bad at working out on my own, so crossfit seemed like a great way to get me in the gym. I also enjoyed that I could be in and out in an hour, and not have to spend all day at the gym. What is your favorite/least favorite thing we do in CrossFit? Favorite thing: Playing basketball, Abs, Bench Press. Least Favorite thing: having to hang out with Lankford daily. How has CrossFit H Dub positively affected you? H Dub has built a great sense of community which I think is most important in crossfit. Any crossfit gym you go to can post a workout on the board, but the people inside of the gym truly is what makes it special. Trey and Lacee have done a great job in building a great community and culture and can't thank them enough. Many of my best friends I've met through Crossfit and through H Dub, and it becomes a place that is the highlight of my day and a place I look forward to visiting daily, which I think is rare for a fitness facility. Before H Dub, fitness often times felt like a chore to me. What advice do you have for newcomers? Consistency is key. I like to think of fitness like making a sweater, where each individual workout is a new thread in the sweater. Missing one or two workouts, from a distance doesn't really seem like a big deal and nobody will be able to tell that anything is wrong with your sweater. I'm a big believer in being well balanced and occasionally skipping workouts for fun activities outside of the gym. However, if you want that cashmere sweater, you gotta show up consistently to get as many threads in your fitness journey to make a beautiful product. What is something no one at the gym knows about you? Colin Powell is my uncle. Who are 3 people you would have a meal or drink with dead or alive? Peyton Manning, Warren Buffett, Trey Fitch. If you had an intro song when you walk into the gym what would it be? "Here's to Never Growing Up"-Avril Lavigne. Any time an angsty punk rock teen can create a song that transcends generations, I think it's a true work of art. Favorite Sport? To watch: VOLS To play: Kickball obviously. If you could have one super power what would it be? The power of healing. Illnesses cause so much stress in so many families, it'd be great to be able to fix them all. What is your favorite cheat meal? Margs and Queso. Emphasis on plural margs.
