February's Athlete of the Month
Time to highlight one of our spectacular athletes! What makes up an Athlete of the Month? Not RX’ing every workout or lifting the most weight. This athlete exhibits consistency and a hard work mentality. Every time they come to the gym they have a good attitude and give their all. This person is also welcoming of others, helping make CFHD the best community there is. Each month we choose a different athlete and post some fun facts about them to help y’all get to know them better.
Congrats to Kizzy Kendrick! This woman can only be described as an inspiration. Despite some hard obstacles she's had to overcome in her life, she continues to persevere and make her health a priority. Not only that, but she does so with a smile and positive attitude. We love having her kind spirit in our H Dub fam. We could all use a little of her work ethic and good vibes mentality!
Name: Kizzy Kendrick Hometown: “The D” (Detroit, MI) Age: 42 years (11 mos, 2 wks) Occupation: Minister • Preacher • FT PhD Student Tell us a little bit about yourself: I am a wife and mother of 4 girls, 1 heavenly boy, and a cat named Hansel. Currently, I spend most days in my at-home study—working toward my PhD. I love a good game of Just Dance, have an array of music on my Apple playlist, have stories attached to all the shoes I own, and just picked up coffee about a year ago. What were your goals when you started training? My goals when I started training included weight loss and establishing a good relationship with food as well as my mental/emotional self. How long have you been at H Dub and how did you get into it? I have been at H Dub since June 2020. In short, I found H Dub in response to my desire to do GPP with people who looked like me: I was looking for a community of CrossFitters who expressed their goal of inclusivity both verbally and tangibly. (Trey was one of the coaches who responded to a post I made in a local CF group, during the Greg Glassman controversy, regarding my desire to find a CF gym who had at least a 15% population of POC (people of color) in their community; and who either had already dropped their CF affiliation or were of the ones who decided to do so as a response of solidarity against Glassman’s remarks about black lives. What is your favorite/least favorite thing we do in training? My favorite thing to do is benchpresses. Reminds me of my father, who had huge guns and used to train in our yard when I was a child. I also love all strongman moves. Least favorite thing to do is any move involving full-depth squatting (like the Clean), because my knees won’t let me! 😝 How has H Dub positively affected you? H Dub’s environment has been SUPER encouraging in many ways, since the beginning and all the way through. The first people I met were Jimmie and his wife, Abby! They were training when I was “touring” new gyms. (#Representation) They greeted me kindly, answered every question, then said “See you soon,” on my way out the door. Lol. And they did see me “soon.” Coach Eve has been the most fun and funniest to work with because she doesn’t let up on me. A sympathetic statement from her: “If you get to about 500m on the bike, and feel like your knees just can’t take anymore, switch to ski-erg.” Lol What advice do you have for newcomers? Despite how intimidating it can look peering from the outside in, know that this type of training is, indeed, for every one and every body—so long as you are willing to lean into where you are, and build from there. The good news is that one step in any direction leads to a destination; the better news is that one step in the RIGHT direction leads to your goals. #KeepGoing What is something no one at the gym knows about you? I’m a huge Rocky fan. I own all the movies, including the Creed franchise. (Another reason I love benchpresses and also why I’ve done boxing training. Have a heavy bag in my garage gym currently.) I never eat chicken down to the bone because I don’t like the sight of the bone. Lol Who are 3 people you would have a meal or drink with dead or alive? Tupac Shakur; Alfred Boyd; Jesus If you had an intro song when you walk into the gym what would it be? “Trophies,” by Drake; or “Destiny,” by NF. Favorite Sport? Functional Fitness, d’uh. If you could have one super power what would it be? Invisibility What is your favorite cheat meal? Any type of pizza; mini strawberry frosted donuts.
